IAP 13 ~ Sophie le Roux

Sophie le Roux is a Photographer based in London. Her photography is almost entirely preoccupied by texture, colour, and chance. She frequently uses expired film to produce unpredictable, aleatory pictures, and is fascinated by the accidents that occur at the beginning and end of the roll: a counter intuitive blaze of colour, an elegant chaos of shapes. The camera is encouraged to create something new out of what she’s pointed it at, so that the final result seems to merge the external world with an interior imagination: a photograph captured in the act of capturing itself. The unusual is discovered inside the usual.

Zooming in and out on the island of Malta, and its neighbour Gozo.

All eroding, all decaying under salt spray and sun. You've never more than a few feet away from a diving board into the sea. You could eat your lunch and then just jump into the sea, without having to walk more than 10 meters. The sea is very rough in the evenings, jumping in then would require great caution and strength. You're never more than a couple of miles away from a cathedral.  The cacti are untameable and are trying to penetrate fences, quietly. The grids are ancient salt pans. It wasn't the season for collecting salt, and there was some red tape barring entry, but no one paid attention. Malta is home to the most significant collection of weird and wonderful door knockers I've seen in the world so far - sometimes brash golden sea creatures, sometimes fragile roman faces covered in flecks of paint.

1. A blue rose that everyone thinks is really blue, but come on, it isn't. Botanic Gardens of Bilbao, before shooting a clown act at the teatro.

2. The loudest beach.

3. Swans of Eton. The best thing about Eton is the fudge shops. Vegan fudge is available.

4. Two old friends in Poole, after a 70th birthday celebration. Jellyfish and sparkling water.

5. Trying to be Martin Parr from a distance. This is an example of how you can jump into the sea from rocks very easily on the island of Malta.

6. An alter at a Cathedral in Malta. 60th of a second is jammed on my camera, so whenever I shoot there I have to manually wind back the dial until the shutter clicks, idk why, I had it fixed. So it blurs like this...but I'm a fan of the effect.

1. A kimchi-making party in August 2017, Berlin. So low an ISO, so dark a kitchen, but a great desire to capture the giant pink plastic bowls with many hands stuck in them. What comes out is deep muddy shades of mustard and neon cornflower markings.

2. A chalky pink lion, in a graveyard, on the hottest day in London of 2019. My friend's back garden was connected to the cemetery, and we hopped over with a decaying ladder. She was much bolder than me, I was secretly very scared of scraping my elbows on the brick wall.

3. Flats for rent in Malta, 4pm, October.

4. Peeling billboard, near Eton, missed my train out of laziness.

5. Exciting car bobbles, Malta, hottest part of the day.
