(phone emoji & dragon emoji) is a collaboration between Selma Lindgren and Arantxa Ciafrino.
Arantxa Ciafrino is a museologist and art historian with experience working in galleries and museums in Brazil, Spain, and Germany. She is the founder and curator of Wechseln, a series of art events that fosters artists working with video, sound art and perfomance.
Selma Lindgren, born 1997 in Berlin grew up in Norway and is currently studying Scenography at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. She is interested in working with found material, exploring its performative agency and finding meeting points between theatre and fine arts.
In 2019 Selma Lindgren and Arantxa Ciafrino exhibited a video/installation piece that used their chat history on WhatsApp as the main material in Vienna. They searched for certain words, such as, arrive and leave in their WhatsApp chat as a way to understand and reflect on their relationship. By sharing it with the public they were instigating a reflection on contemporary relationships and ways of relating to one another.
Now, more than ever, many relationships have become exclusively possible through social media channels and technology. We would like to know; 1. how are people relating to one another, 2. how is the character of these relationships and invite them to share this information with others anonymously.
The videos below were exhibited on the personal cellphones of each artists. The information was jumping quickly from one message to the other, making the public curious to read the content but relating it to the speed of which this kind of content in virtual conversations is produced, sent and later on forgotten.
Their participation in “who’s out there?” will be published here on the 15th January to mark the beginning of Vorspiel, 2021.
We would like to know the following information:
Firstly, 1. choose a person you are writing to frequently these days
2. Open the chat between you and them
3. In whatsapp/telegram/messenger you can search for words and it will tell you sentences containing this word
This is an ongoing project. As we collect information over the next weeks, images, videos and sounds will be added onto this page until the 1. March 2021.
